Super Bowl - Eli Does It El-Way
The New York Giants were carried through the final moments of this Super Bowl by Eli Manning. That final drive, maybe “The Drive” from now on, just as Lawrence Taylor is no longer today’s “L.T.”, brought back memories of great drives past.
Eli Manning was the key to the Giants victory. That drive, summarizing everything that the Giants stood for the past several weeks of the season, a combination of tenacity, guts, will and a pinch of luck. The player that Manning most reminded me of as it was happening was John Elway, he himself no stranger to great comebacks during his legendary tenure with the Denver Broncos.
You could say Brett Favre, or even a Joe Montana-type of performance, and you too would be right. It feels strange to put Eli Manning in the same sentence with those greats, but at least for one season, for this season, Eli Manning belongs. What will happen beyond this is anyone’s guess. I personally have a hard time thinking he will go back into his shell, headed towards Rex Grossman-ville.
Eli Manning has arrived, busting a party no one expected he or the New York Giants to attend. Little Bro’ did Tony Romo, Brett Favre and Tom Brady in consecutive games, using Brady cool to get the job done. Who knows. Maybe someday people will refer to great drives to win big games as, “Eli drives.”
Wonder what Tiki Barber is thinking today? He is a politically correct character, and he will say the right things, how he is happy for Eli, his old teammates, blah, blah, blah. If it were me, my reaction would have been, why did I leave one season early?” Believe me, in Tiki Barber’s heart, the same feelings exist. Human nature is what it is.
The reality is that Tiki Barber did not believe in his Coach, his Quarterback or his teammates. Tiki, for all his talk, loves Tiki. If he thought for one second a Super Bowl was on the horizon, #21 would have had the best view in the house, right behind Eli Manning, Super Bowl MVP.
